Abstract:
  • This report analyses the perceptions of social cohesion between migrant and host communities in five Ecuadorian neighbourhoods with high interaction levels, based on 837 surveys. The findings show that motivations for migration, length of stay, and adaptation processes shape expectations and social dynamics, while over half of migrants—especially women—report differential treatment linked to nationality, particularly in neighbourhoods and public transport. Both groups face similar daily challenges, though more severe for migrants, and show moderate willingness to engage in each other’s activities, with economic concerns identified as a key source of tension. Despite generally low stigma levels, significant gaps persist in mutual cultural understanding, with many respondents from both groups unfamiliar with the other’s traditions. Communities propose face‑to‑face initiatives—such as entrepreneurship projects, cultural fairs, and intercultural events—as the most effective ways to strengthen cohesion, reduce discrimination, and foster inclusive coexistence.
