Abstract:
  • The survey conducted in May 2023 across Chiquimula and Quetzaltenango gathered 1,244 responses to assess perceptions of COVID-19 vaccination and related issues after the pandemic. Results show that 64.47% of respondents had received at least one vaccine dose, while 35.53% remained unvaccinated, mainly due to mistrust of vaccine safety (61.54%), disbelief in COVID-19 (11.54%), and perceived lack of risk (6.79%). Of those unvaccinated, 66.52% would still refuse vaccination, though 11.76% expressed willingness, indicating potential for targeted interventions. Rumors significantly influenced mistrust, with 55.47% reporting exposure to misinformation, primarily about suspected deaths, side effects, and doubts about vaccine reliability. Trust in the vaccine stands at 62.22%, and 76.53% trust health personnel, though gaps in communication and perceived lack of presence persist. Economic and mental health impacts remain pronounced: 67.03% reported worsened economic conditions, and 50.54% noted effects on mental health, with women disproportionately affected. Despite 93.63% lacking access to mental health services, only 64.29% expressed interest in them. Recommendations emphasize culturally sensitive messaging in local languages (Chorti, Quiché, Mam), addressing rumors, promoting vaccination for minors, and integrating gender and ethnic approaches into community engagement strategies.
